The 3 1/2 day course will bring together 20 up-and-coming young PSAC activists from across the Prairies region to learn new skills and explore ways the Union can better meet the needs of younger workers. Application forms will be available through the PSAC ROs and the PSAC Prairies website later this summer. For more information, contact Judy Shannon, PSAC Prairies Regional Education Officer, at shannoj@psac.com or (780) 423-1290. ________________________________________________________________________ International Youth Day (August 12, 2010)
On August 12, the world celebrated International Youth Day. This year’s theme, "Dialogue and Mutual Understanding", reaffirms the importance of uniting on a common issue and brings to light the challenges around gaining respect by government stakeholders to bring about positive change for young workers. In an official statement, the Canadian Labour Congress called upon the government to make the commitment to ratify Convention 138 which progressively raises the minimum age of employment in each jurisdiction to protect the health and well being of young people. The CLC also asked the government to advocate for positive social change around the world and called upon all affiliate organizations, civil society groups, and allies to work actively to end child labour once and for all. In December 2009, the United Nations General Assembly adopted resolution 64/134 proclaiming the Year, signifying the importance the international community places on integrating youth-related issues into global, regional, and national development agendas. Under the theme Dialogue and Mutual Understanding, the Year aims to promote the ideals of peace, respect for human rights and solidarity across generations, cultures, religions and civilizations. "Youth should be given a chance to take an active part in the decision-making of local, national and global levels." -- United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon For more information, visit the United Nations International Year of Youth (IYY) website. ________________________________________________________________________ The Prairie Region Council Youth Rep is part of the PRCHuman Rights, Women & Youth Committee
"As the future of the Union, all Youth have a crucial part to play. We must become involved, and encourage Youth to become the future leaders of tomorrow. This can all start with you; if you are a self declared Youth under 30 please contact me with your contact information " -- Brother Chad Kemery
